What Can Businesses Do to Combat the Violence?
Legal contributor Attorney Brian Mickelsen, an experienced wrongful death lawyer, has represented many families of those killed or injured by the actions or negligence of others. Mr. Mickelsen offered the following commentary on South Carolina’s growing violence:
“Businesses play an important part in addressing South Carolina’s gun violence problem. Far too often, business owners allow crime, loitering, vandalism, and drug activity to happen on their property without addressing it. What appears to be a non-violent crime, in a matter of seconds, can turn deadly. This is precisely why businesses should maintain open lines of communication with local law enforcement. Request the crime stats. Stay informed about what happens on your property. Trespass loiters and dangerous persons. Maintain adequate lighting. Clean up the graffiti. Install cameras that actually work. And hire a security guard where necessary.”
