Semi-truck Driver Attempts Illegal Pass, Crosses Center Line into Oncoming Traffic, And Causes Fatal Head-on Collision on State Route 93
WZAZ News reports that on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, just before 9 a.m., a semi-truck was heading northbound on State Route 93, just one mile south of State Route 328 in Vinton County, Ohio. As the truck driver was heading northbound, a vehicle in front of the semi slowed for a crossing animal. Instead of slowing for traffic in front, the semi-truck driver decided to attempt to pass. The semi-truck driver crossed the center line into oncoming southbound traffic. At the same time, Brian D. Christensen, 58 years old, of Sunbury, Ohio, was driving southbound on State Route 93 and was hit head-on by the semi-truck.
Mr. Christensen was transported to the hospital. Despite his best efforts and those of emergency personnel, Mr. Christensen succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Rules of the Road – Higher Standards and Regulations for Drivers of Commercial Vehicles
Legal contributor Attorney Brian Mickelsen, an experienced truck accident lawyer, represents victims killed in semi-truck / tractor-trailer accidents. Below, Attorney Mickelsen shared his insight into the legal options available to victims injured in commercial truck accidents.
“Drivers of commercial vehicles like semi-trucks are held to higher standards than your average driver. Because of their size, semi-trucks take longer to pass and get up to speed – there is a reason why semi-trucks are the ones getting passed, not the ones doing the passing. When semi-truck drivers engage in reckless conduct and attempt to pass in situations where they should slow, terrible things like this accident can happen.”
What Should I Do When I Or A Loved One Have Been Involved In A Trucking Accident?
“After an accident, it is critically important that key evidence is not lost or destroyed – witness testimony, dash and body cam footage from responding officers, dashcam from the truck involved, hours of service logs for the at-fault truck driver, electronic black box data from all vehicles involved, size and weight permits for the at-fault truck, vehicle inspections from the at-fault truck, toxicology reports, cell phone data from the at-fault driver, etc.”
